Refractive Lens Exchange
This Procedure is the preferred choice of procedure when compared to Monovision Lasik for people above 40 years.
Any Laser Procedure, whether PRK or Lasik corrects Distance or Near vision by changing the focusing power of Cornea.
RLE is another method of correcting both Distance and Near vision by changing the focusing power of lens.
How Refractive Lens Exchange Corrects Vision
The correction power what is desired is measured before surgery. Depending on vision correction you need like Near Vision or Distance Vision along with correction of astigmatism (Cylindrical Power) the choice of lens is selected for replacing with natural lens.
Types of Intra Ocular Lenses Used
There are different types of Intra Ocular Lenses to choose from for the desired power correction
Monofocal Lens : Corrects Distance or Near Vision
Toric Lens : Corrects Distance or Near with Astigmatism
Multifocal lens : Corrects Distance and Near Vison
Multifocal and Extended Range Lenses : Gives Distance, Near & Intermediate Vision
Why Refractive Lens Exchange
- If you are above 40 years, RLE is preferred choice of procedure as Cataract will not develop once RLE
is performed - RLE Corrects extreme refractive errors
- Corrects Distance and Near Visions
- If you are a non-laser candidate (Not Eligible for Lasik)
- No Possibility of Cataract in Future
How the procedure is performed
Once you select the lens as per the decision made with surgeon, the procedure is performed as follows.
Prior to surgery, anaesthetic drops will be administered on eye and a micro incision is made on Cornea.
The natural lens is extracted with a suction mechanism and in the same place the implantable Intra Ocular Lens is placed.
The incision is left without sutures as its very small incision varying from 0.8 mm to 1.2 mm.
Typically, the Procedure is performed on two different sittings with two weeks apart.

FAQs
Is Refractive IOL Visible to Others
No Synthetic IOL inserted as a refractive lens is not visible to others and also you even if they look
closely
Can Refractive IOL Correct both Near and Distant Vision
Yes, Refractive IOL can correct Distance Vision & Near Vision and If you chose Extended Range
IOL, even intermediate vision is improved
If I have Dry eyes, can I still go for RLE
Yes, as refractive IOL is placed inside the eye without touching the surface of cornea, refractive
IOL is a good choice for patients with Dry Eyes
What powers can be corrected with Refractive IOL
Refractive IOLs can correct all extreme myopia s and severe astigmatism errors
Do Refractive IOL s increase Intra Ocular Pressure
No, Refractive IOLs do not increase the Intra Ocular Pressure. They are placed inside the bag
called capsule which used to hold the natural crystalline lens.
What are the complications of Refractive IOLs
There are no usual complications noted with Refractive IOLs, however a layer may be formed
after few years on the back side of bag where the IOL is placed, and is called as posterior capsular
opacity. The vision may become hazy. This layer can be taken off in out patient consultation
within minutes using a laser called Yag Laser
Can I undergo Refractive IOL Exchange procedure in both eyes on same Day
Yes, it is possible to undergo ICL in both eyes on same day, however we recommend to have two
weeks apart for each eye
