Cataract removal with
Multifocal Intra Ocular Lens

Cataract is naturally occurring disorder in every person after certain age. The occurrence is more after the age of 60 years.

Cataract is a condition where the natural human lens becomes opaque and hard gradually.

As the cataract begins to develop, the light which passes through the natural lens gradually diminishes and a refractive error called Index Myopia develops along with poor vision.

A person with cataract then will have a cloudy and diminished vision.

The only way of removing cataract is through surgery.

There are 2 ways that a Cataract effects refractive errors
1) Index Myopia before cataract Surgery
2) Presbyopia after Cataract Surgery with Monofocal IOL

If you are around 60 years and you want to go for a Refractive and Cataract Removal Surgery at the
same time a Refractive Cataract Surgery is the best option

How is It done

Similar to Refractive Lens Exchange, the steps involved in Cataract Surgery are also the same. However, extraction of cataract step is different. And rest of the procedure is also same.

There are different types of Intra Ocular Lenses to choose from for the desired refractive power correction after a cataract surgery.

Why Refractive Cataract Surgery

  • When a cataract surgery is done using standard IOL, and if you were already wearing any kind of
glasses prior to surgery for either near or distance vision, you will have to use the glasses after the
    surgery.
  • Cataract surgery is an opportunity for entering a glassfreelife for people with Cataract
  • A Refractive Cataract Surgery Corrects Pre-existing Near and Distance Vision Problems
  • Refractive Cataract Surgery can correct Astigmatism
  • Refractive Cataract Surgery enhances quality of life

Toric Lens

Corrects Distance or Near with Astigmatism

Multifocal lens

Corrects Distance and Near Vison

Multifocal and Extended Range Lenses

Gives Distance, Near & Intermediate Vision

After the Initial incision of 1.2 mm on cornea, a probe is inserted into the lens capsule (Lens Bag) and using mild ultra-sonic probe, the hard lens is broken into many small micro segments. This process is called Phacoemulsification

The cataract pieces then are extracted using a suction probe and the IOL which is decided to be placed inside the eye is then placed safely in the lens bag.

The incision is left without sutures as it is very small and heals on its own

Typically, the Procedure is performed on two different sittings with two weeks apart

Suitable for

People above 60 Years and Patients with Cataract of any age

Refractive Errors Correction

Corrects Distance & Near Visions and enhances intermediate vision also

Advantages

High Quality Vision – As IOL can be manufactured to high level of optical quality it produces crisp and clear vision
Biocompatibility: Made with Synthetic Biocompatible Material
Comfort: Patients cannot feel IOL inside the Eye
Invisibility: IOL is totally invisible

Duration of the procedure

10- 15 minutes

Recovery

1 Day

Before Surgery

Primary Consultation for vision check-up, Retina Health A measuring test called Optical Biometry to decide the right focus IOL Basic Laboratory tests – Viral Screening and Blood Sugar for Diabetics

After Surgery

Post operative medications will be prescribed Second Eye Procedure is scheduled 2 weeks apart generally Recommended post-surgery visits are generally on day 1: 3 & after a week

Resuming work

The 2 nd day from procedure, work can be resumed

FAQs

No Synthetic IOL inserted as a refractive lens is not visible to others and also you even if they look
closely

Yes, Refractive IOL can correct Distance Vision & Near Vision and If you chose Extended Range
IOL, even intermediate vision is improved

Refractive IOLs can correct all extreme myopia s and severe astigmatism errors

No, Refractive IOLs do not increase the Intra Ocular Pressure. They are placed inside the bag
called capsule which used to hold the natural crystalline lens.

There are no usual complications noted with Refractive IOLs, however a layer may be formed
after few years on the back side of bag where the IOL is placed, and is called as posterior capsular
opacity. The vision may become hazy. This layer can be taken off in outpatient consultation within
minutes using a laser called Yag Laser

Yes, it is possible to undergo Refractive Cataract in both eyes on same day, however we
recommend to have two weeks apart for each eye
